Trapped hiker hoisted from Mojave Narrows in night rescue

A Los Angeles County Fire Department rescue helicopter was used to conduct a night hoist rescue of a hiker trapped 200 feet above the Mojave River, and 600 feet below the top of the rock formation Thursday evening according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department officials.

Deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Victorville Station were alerted Thursday at approximately 9 p.m. by the hiker’s companion that the man had been trapped on the rocks when it had become too dark for him to find his way safely down.

San Bernardino County Fire Department and Apple Valley Fire Protection District rescue teams both responded to the scene, and decided a night rescue would be too dangerous. A rescue helicopter from LACFD with proper equipment was then called in to conduct a hoist rescue of the man.

The man was removed from the rocks and transported immediately to Victor Valley Community Hospital. The extent of any injuries were unkown at the time of his rescue.
