New Night Vision Advisory Council formed

Night vision goggle (NVG) industry professionals convened in Dallas, Texas, US on 8 August to form a new Night Vision Advisory Council (NVAC), which is seeking additional members with a desire to aid in shaping the future of the night vision industry.
Hosted by FlightSafety International, the purpose of the meeting was to develop a council to provide recommendations on safety, education, standardisation, and other issues pertinent to the NVG industry, including the air medical, fire fighting, and law enforcement segments. These recommendations will be provided to government entities to include the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other bodies engaged in night vision oversight.

In a statement, NVAC said its formation came in response to an FAA request at the NightCon 2011 conference for industry-specific night vision recommendations. The council consists of night vision manufacturers, trainers, and operators providing guidance to enhance regulatory issues, and its members are aviation professionals that have an interest in regulatory and operational oversight of the night vision industry, said NVAC.

Initially, the Council will focus on night vision goggle (NVG) related issues. The council stated that it will function autonomously without influence of interest groups or organisations, and its primary purpose of NVAC initiatives will be safety, education, consultation, and facilitation of night vision related activities.

The council’s next meeting is scheduled for 19 September in Dallas, Texas, US in advance of NightCon 2012.
