LONDONDERRY, N.H., January 24, 2017 – L3 Warrior Systems – Insight Technology (L3 Insight Technology) announced today that it has received the first Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical Standard Order (TSO)-C164a authorization for its M949 Aviation Night Vision Goggle (ANVG). L3 is the first company to receive this authorization, which standardizes quality and safety specifications for ANVGs.
“It is a great honor to be the first and only company at this time approved to manufacture night vision goggles under the new FAA TSO-C164a standard,” said Todd Stirtzinger, President of L3 Insight Technology. “We hold our products to the highest safety standards, and we are proud to work with the FAA to move the night vision industry forward and ensure all goggles used by commercial pilots meet the same rigorous standards.”
The M949 is a helmet-mounted binocular night vision goggle that provides pilots with an image-intensified view outside of the aircraft during nighttime and adverse weather conditions. It is available with green or white phosphor image intensification tubes. Under the new TSO-C164a standard, the FAA has certified the availability of white phosphor goggles to commercial pilots, subject to operational approval.
The TSO certification process was an 18-month effort between L3, the FAA and Aviation Specialties Unlimited (ASU). ASU worked closely with the FAA to gain flight approval of L3’s white phosphor M949 ANVGs in advance of the TSO Authorization, as well as working with L3 Insight Technology to ensure maintenance manuals complied with the new TSO-C164a authorization.
