Boise, Idaho — Aviation Specialties Unlimited, Inc. (ASU), a leading provider of night vision goggle (NVG) aviation solutions and aircraft modification services, has received official notification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) confirming approval of a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for multiple Bell aircraft platforms under a single STC (EASA STC 10078190).
The certification covers the Bell 212, Bell 412, AB212, AB412, and 412EP helicopters, supporting enhanced night vision operations for civil and military aviation. The original FAA STC reference is SR01634SE, further reinforcing ASU’s global regulatory credibility.
Streamlined STC Certification for Aircraft Modifications
With more than 30 years of experience in aviation night vision systems and aircraft lighting modifications, ASU continues to simplify the STC approval process for both helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft operators.
Thanks to ASU’s established reputation with both the FAA and EASA, the company’s in-house Company Test Team helps customers significantly reduce certification timelines, operational downtime, and costs associated with aircraft upgrades.
“Our test team collaborated closely with the FAA and EASA for years,” said Chad St. Francis, ASU Vice President of Business Development and instructor pilot. “The experience of our engineering and certification team has enabled us to streamline STC approvals, helping our customers avoid costly delays and maintain mission readiness.”
Expert Team Drives EASA Certification Success
ASU’s certification success was driven by its highly experienced aviation team. Chief Pilot Alexander Emmel, serving as an FAA and EASA Category II Test Pilot, and Vice President of Aircraft Services Kip McDermott worked closely with EASA regulators throughout the process.
Their combined expertise ensured all systems were thoroughly tested, documented, and certified to meet strict international aviation standards. Both Emmel and McDermott are also pursuing Designated Engineering Representative (DER) designations, further strengthening ASU’s engineering capabilities.
Supporting Global Helicopter Operations and Peacekeeping Missions
This multi-aircraft STC plays a critical role for ASU partner Global Helicopter Service (GHS), enabling their fleet to operate safely during nighttime missions and global peacekeeping operations.
ASU previously completed a similar STC for the Airbus H225 helicopter, supporting United Nations missions in Africa, demonstrating its expertise in NVG-compatible aircraft modifications for international operations.
“Reducing downtime and costs is essential for operators conducting peacekeeping missions,” said Emmel. “Our mission is to help helicopter crews operate safely with night vision goggle technology. By modifying aircraft lighting and ensuring proper training, we enable operators to fully leverage this critical capability.”
Strategic Partnership Expands NVG Capabilities in Europe
Global Helicopter Service, an EASA-approved operator based in Kirchanschöring, Germany, offers a diverse fleet including the Sikorsky S76C++, Bell 412, and Airbus H225 helicopters.
Through its partnership with ASU, GHS provides inspection, certification, and integration services for advanced night vision systems across Europe.
“GHS is honored to partner with ASU as a distributor for Europe,” said Dominik Goldfuss, CEO of GHS. “Together, we deliver advanced NVG technology solutions, ensuring operators meet regulatory requirements while enhancing safety and performance.”
Industry Leadership in Night Vision STCs
ASU currently holds more than 60 FAA, EASA, and international STCs, positioning the company as a global leader in night vision aviation solutions and aircraft certification services.
Operators and industry professionals can connect with ASU to discuss STC requirements, aircraft lighting modifications, and NVG programs at industry events such as Heli-Expo.
