Boise, Idaho – Aviation Specialties Unlimited, Inc. (ASU) is pleased to announce the addition of Mitch McKinstry to its team of Night Vision Goggle (NVG) Instructor Pilots, further strengthening its commitment to advancing aviation safety worldwide.
Experienced NVG Instructor Joins ASU
“Mitch is no stranger to the industry or ASU, and he brings with him proven NVG training experience,” said ASU President Dr. Joe Estrera. “ASU continues to win aviation training contracts globally, and his expertise is a valuable asset to our growing team. His skills will support our mission to enhance night vision flight safety for pilots worldwide.”
A Distinguished Military Aviation Career
McKinstry, a native of Twin Falls, Idaho, was inspired early in his career by ASU’s founder, Mike Atwood, to enter the aviation field through the Idaho Army National Guard. His 38-year military aviation career saw him serve in multiple roles, including flight instructor, standardization pilot, and master gunner, primarily piloting the AH-64 Apache helicopter.
Later in his career, he transitioned to the UH-60L Black Hawk as an instructor and safety officer. Retiring in August 2022 as the State Aviation Safety Officer for the Idaho Army National Guard, McKinstry briefly worked with Life Flight Network before joining ASU. His impressive experience includes over 2,000 hours of night flying using Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS).
“It really is an honor to continue a career instructing and flying with such an outstanding company and leader in the industry,” said McKinstry. “I look forward to working with the ASU team to support our partners in making night flying operations as safe as possible.”
Key Role in FAA Rotorcraft Training Contracts
ASU recently secured the FAA rotorcraft training contract, and McKinstry will play a critical role in training FAA pilots and aircrews in initial and recurrent NVG training. His expertise will help enhance helicopter pilot safety and night operations training.
McKinstry joins an experienced team of NVG instructor pilots who have trained over 6,000 pilots and crew members. ASU holds FAA certifications in Part 133, 135, 137, and 141, further reinforcing its industry leadership in NVG aviation training.
