Boise, Idaho — June 1, 2022 — Aviation Specialties Unlimited (ASU) has announced the promotion of long‑time team member Kip McDermott to Vice President of Aviation Operations, marking a strategic step forward in the company’s continued growth and operational excellence.
McDermott brings more than 21 years of experience with ASU, having joined the organization in 2001 as one of its earliest employees. Over two decades, he has played a critical role in developing ASU’s aviation capabilities, supporting aircraft readiness, advancing training programs, and strengthening certification and compliance efforts.
“Kip has been part of the ASU team since the very beginning,” said Dr. Joseph Estrera, President of Aviation Specialties Unlimited. “His institutional knowledge, technical expertise, and leadership experience position him uniquely to drive the continued success of our aviation training and flight operations.”
A Strategic Expansion of Aviation Operations
McDermott’s promotion coincides with the formation of ASU’s new Aviation Operations organization, a strategic consolidation of the company’s Aviation Services and Aircraft Services divisions. This integrated structure is designed to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and better support customers across ASU’s full range of aviation solutions.
The Aviation Operations organization encompasses:
- Night Vision Goggle (NVG) training
- Air carrier operations
- Contract maintenance
- FAA repair station services
- Aircraft certification
- NVG Service Center operations
In his new role, McDermott will oversee training and flight operations while providing organizational leadership to support ASU’s long‑term strategic objectives.
Extensive Technical and Leadership Background
Prior to his promotion, McDermott served as Vice President of Engineering and Executive Director of Business Development, where he helped guide ASU’s technical innovation and market expansion. He holds:
- Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certification (1992)
- Inspection Authorization from Avionics and Electronics of America (2002)
McDermott also brings extensive operational experience from his service as a crew chief on multiple aircraft platforms, including the UH‑1H, UH‑60, and CH‑47D. His background includes service in the United States Army and work with Dyncorp Aerospace in Mannheim, Germany.
Advancing NVG and Certification Capabilities
In recent years, McDermott has been instrumental in advancing several key ASU initiatives, including working with aircraft operators to obtain EASA Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) across multiple aircraft platforms. From the earliest days of ASU, he helped establish proven methodologies for night vision‑compatible aircraft lighting, improving certification efficiency and supporting safer night operations.
McDermott’s promotion reflects ASU’s commitment to investing in experienced leadership that strengthens aviation safety, operational performance, and customer support worldwide.
